LED's are completely new light-sources. They produce light very efficiently and have a long lifespan. Today LED's can produce any colour of the visible spectrum directly. Also the maximal achieved intensity has improved drastically. This makes them highly suitable for use in traffic lights and shipping signals. The use of led-lights can reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs by as much as 80%. Due to greater reliability traffic obstructions are reduced and road safety is enhanced by better visibility.

Led2
In view of the necessity for energy conservation, the Dutch government is promoting the use of LED's in signal-lights. In order to harmonise the use of LED signals, the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management has established technical criteria for LED signal-lights, with the objective to stimulate suppliers to produce these highly sophisticated signals within predefined standards, so interchange-ability is guaranteed. It is named: the Led2 standard
